It has to do with our British heritage, and the fact that no one has forced industry (or anyone else) to go metric. A moderately good summary of the metric history is given by <a>Wikipedia</a>. What I meant with the gallon-litre-size-history thing was that measuring things in gallons seems to indicate great quantities and supply of it. Yes, it's not as much as Europe or other countries; yes, I agree, it's not sustainable; you are correct, our economy has been built on the notion of cheap energy; and, yes, I think in the long run it will affect positive change.
